Problem
A reputed think thank was looking for new takes on geopolitical change. It was preparing a publication for its regular clients, as those clients were concerned about rising levels of international tension. Therefore, the think thank wanted to identify when and why future conflicts might take place.
Branwen offered foresight on territorial conflict by analysing several lasting disputes over land ownership. For many years, if not decades, those disputes had been dormant. However, Branwen noticed that these old territorial conflicts were warming up again, potentially reviving the classic practice of war-for-land.
Approach
Results
Branwen identified a high possibility of old territorial disputes leading to violent conflict, including in Europe. The think thank included this result in its own foresight report to its clients. It did so ahead of the renewed wars in Armenia and Azerbaijan (2020) and Ukraine (2022) - the later being the formal revival of territorial war in Europe.
